The Best Lakes near Phoenix: Canyon Lake, Saguaro Lake & Lake Pleasant

Arizona Lakes I Keep Going Back To: Canyon Lake, Saguaro Lake & Lake Pleasant

One of the things I love most about living in Arizona is how many completely different landscapes we have access to sometimes within the same weekend. Yes, we’re known for desert hikes and red rocks, but Arizona lakes? Underrated and so good.

Three of my go to spots for water days, reset days, and “this is why I live here” moments are Canyon Lake, Saguaro Lake, and Lake Pleasant. Each one has a totally different vibe, which makes them perfect for different moods, seasons, and activities.

If you’re searching for the best lakes in Arizona or wondering what you can actually do at each one this is your local guide.

Canyon Lake: Scenic, Calm & Perfect for Slower Days

Tucked along the Apache Trail near Apache Junction, Canyon Lake feels like a hidden canyon escape. Steep rock walls, winding water, and quieter energy make this one ideal when you want nature without chaos.

Things to Do at Canyon Lake

  • Kayaking or paddleboarding through canyon walls

  • Boating and jet skiing (less crowded than other lakes)

  • Fishing and shoreline picnics

  • Scenic drives and photography (this lake is gorgeous)

Canyon Lake is one of my favorite spots for peaceful mornings or sunset paddles. It’s calm, grounding, and perfect if you want a slower, more scenic lake day.

Saguaro Lake: Adventure + Easy Access from Phoenix

Located just northeast of Mesa, Saguaro Lake is one of the most popular lakes near Phoenix and for good reason. It’s easy to get to, surrounded by desert scenery, and great for both chill days and active water sports.

Things to Do at Saguaro Lake

  • Paddleboarding and kayaking

  • Boat rentals and jet skiing

  • Cliff jumping (locals know the spots safely, always)

  • Lakeside picnics and swimming

Saguaro Lake is perfect for spontaneous weekends or when friends visit from out of town and want a classic Arizona lake experience without a long drive.

Lake Pleasant: Big Water, Big Energy & Endless Options

If you want space, variety, and full day adventures, Lake Pleasant is the move. Located northwest of Phoenix, it’s one of the largest lakes in Arizona and has something for everyone.

Things to Do at Lake Pleasant

  • Wakeboarding, paddleboarding, tubing, and jet skiing

  • Pontoon boating and party coves

  • Fishing and camping

  • Hiking, picnicking, and sunset views

  • Resaurant & Bar

  • 35 foot tall waterslide

Lake Pleasant feels more social and energetic great for group days, celebrations, or when you want that summer lake vibe with plenty of room to roam.

Which Arizona Lake Is Best?

Honestly? It depends on your lifestyle.

  • Canyon Lake → peaceful, scenic, grounding

  • Saguaro Lake → convenient, adventurous, balanced

  • Lake Pleasant → social, expansive, high energy

That’s what makes Arizona so special you don’t have to choose just one version of outdoor living.

Why Arizona Lake Life Is Part of the Lifestyle

When people think about moving to Arizona, they often picture heat and desert. But lake days, paddleboards, boats, and sunset swims are very much part of the lifestyle here and one of the reasons people fall in love with living in this state.

I love sharing places like this because where you live should support how you want to live whether that’s adventure, calm, connection, or a little bit of everything.

✨ Arizona lived. Arizona explored.
